Conveniently located in the heart of Swindon, the Gemma Short School of Dance & Theatre Arts provides expert training for all ages with a personal touch you just will not find anywhere else.
Whether you are a beginner or an experienced dancer or performer, our well qualified and helpful staff are trained to assist you in all aspects of dance and theatre arts. Students have the opportunity to train for ISTD examinations in Ballet, Tap, Modern, Jazz and National Dance, as well as Limbering, Musical Theatre, Singing, Drama, Dance Fitness and Acro for Dance. Students also have the opportunity to compete in regional and national festivals and competitions, and will be encouraged to develop their performance experiences.
We welcome children aged from 1 year in our 'Music, Movement & Make Believe' classes all the way through to our adult classes!
Students have successfully auditioned for full and part time vocational training with prestigious establishments such as: Tring Park Classical Ballet and Nothern Ballet, and have also been seen performing in West End shows or in television commercials.
We take a personalised approach to our training and balance high expectations of ourselves and students with a sense of fun.
The school has newly refurbished studios and a dance shop that stocks all uniform as well as a range of non-uniform dancewear and gift ideas.
We are so excited to announce that GSS student, Matilda Blake, is making her 'West End' Debut in 'The Ferryman,' A 5-star Award-winning play directed by Sam Mendes.
Tildy is playing the role of 'Honor Carney,' the youngest daughter of the Irish 'Carney' farmhouse family.
The Ferryman premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in 2017 and is the fastest selling show in the theatre's history. Tildy's is performing at the Gielgud Theatre, Shaftsbury Avenue, and her first performance was on her 9th Birthday, which Miss Gemma and Russell were luck enough to join Tildy's family to watch! Tildy will perform in the show with it's extended run until April 2018.
Take a look at this lovely article about Matilda's success in the Swindon Advertiser.
Matilda is the third GSS pupil to perform in the West End since the school opened, following in the footsteps of Scarlet Roche & Ellie Benge, who both played Veruca Salt in 'Charlie & The Chocolate Factory,' and Scarlet, who played Baby June in 'Gypsy'.
After the success at the Regional Finals at All England Dance, we have achieved great success in the National Finals held at the prestigious Hackney Empire in London:
Character Solos - 13 & 14yrs
1st Place & Gold Meal - Scarlet Roche
Intermediate Musical Theatre Trios / Quartets
1st Place & Gold Medal - Matilda Blake, Amy Gordon & Scarlet Roche
Modern Solos - 13 & 14yrs
3rd Place & Bronze Medal - Scarlet Roche
These places represent national wins from thousands of dancers who have competed over a period of 18 months! The standard was outstanding throughout the competition.
Well done to Scarlet, Tilde & Amy, as well as our other finalists: Ruby, Ella, Jess, Ellie, Tilly, Sophie & Megan who all received Honours Certificates.
We are so proud of these achievements.
WOW - what a fantastic show!
Thank you to everyone who helped to make it such a success and also to everyone who came to watch.
We are of proud of each and every pupil who performed, from our 1 year old 'Music, Movement & Make Believe' tots through to our adult tappers.

We could not be more proud to announce that Tilly Robison won the Junior class at the ISTD 'Tap Challenge'.
Tilly, who danced alongside 60 competitors, was successful in reaching the final 10, she then danced the class again and was announced the overall winner!
This is such a huge achievement winning one of the ISTD's most prestigious competitions, which replaces the former annual 'Tap Awards'.
Congratulations Tilly, you danced beautifully and we are so proud of you!
